My longing for the island might have something to do with the fact that I live in Wisconsin. January in Wisconsin is not fun when the temps dip below zero. The temps are dipping that low this weekend.
I miss the warm Marco air. I miss shelling and running on the beach. I miss the way the air smells–like the ocean. I miss watching the dolphins and manatees swim by the condo. I miss watching the daily boat and wave-runner parade. I miss the daily dip I take into the pool. I miss swishing my feet into the ocean. I miss watching the activity at the Cape Marco pier. I miss grilling on my lanai. I miss having my morning coffee on the lanai. I miss hearing the ocean. I miss the freedom–freedom from boots, bulky coats, goosebumps, shoveling, icy roads, snowy roads. The list goes on.
I know that it is peak season in southern Florida now. I know the snowbird population is in full force. However, I never feel the impact of peak season on Marco. Sure, there is a bit more traffic and the beaches have more people. However, the traffic is not unbearable like it is elsewhere. Plus, even though there are more people on the beach, the beach is 6 miles long. There is still plenty of beach to enjoy for all. Even going to restaurants is doable. We usually eat out early and then return to the condo to relax.
My daughter is looking over my shoulder right now. She misses the swimming, shelling and golfing. My kids are all golf nuts. Sadly, there isn’t much golfing in Wisconsin this time of year.
I miss Marco Island.
